The Phillies’ struggle with the NL West continues as they are unable to defeat the third ranked Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizen’s Bank Park last night. You would think five combined home runs would be enough to get the Phils a win last night but that simply wasn’t the case as both teams combined for record thirteen home runs leading to a 13-8 Diamondbacks victory.
The previous record was twelve home runs in a White Sox versus Tigers game in 1995 and then was tied again, coincidentally, by the White Sox and Tigers again in 2002.
Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff struggled the first inning allowing home runs to Arizona’s Jarrod Dyson, Ketel Marte, and David Peralta, but that was only the beginning of the disappointing end.
After consecutive inning homers by Eduardo Escobar and a moonshot to center field by Alex Avila, Eickhoff was finally pulled in the fourth inning. He allowed five hits, all homers in his four innings of pitching, which contributed to the franchise record eight home runs set by the D-Backs.
There were moments when the game seemed like it might be within reach for the Phils. For instance, the game tying home run that barely snuck over the wall for Jean Segura knotted the game at three a piece. However, the game was essentially all but over in the sixth after Escobar showed that contact still matters in a game of power, knocking an RBI double to expand the lead to 11-4.
After two consolation homers by Rhys Hoskins and Jay Bruce in the ninth, the Phillies eventually just had to bite the bullet and absorb a crushing 13-8 loss.
The Phillies will have a rematch with the D-Backs tonight at 6:05 PM
