The Phillies win their first time back to back since July 2nd as they dominate the interstate rivals, Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-1 to continue their hot play. After tying the series with NL-Leading Dodgers this past week, the Phils, facing a subpar Pirates team, looked to show their dominance as a potential playoff baseball team.
The initial stages of the game looked like the Phillies might not hold up that statement. After Pittsburgh SP Jordan Lyles walked Rhys Hoskins in the first to bring up JT Realmuto with the bases loaded, it looked like the Phillies had a golden opportunity to knock in some runs but instead JT struck out on a check swing, typical 2019 Phils way to retire an inning.
The Phils dug themselves even deeper into a hole when Arrieta, who has been dealing with a bone spur in his elbow, allowed an RBI single to Pittsburgh’s Diaz to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
However, things turned around for the Phillies(a repeating theme over the past couple of games) after Adam Haseley knocked a beauty of a homerun into deep center field to tie the ball game up. It was Haseley’s second homer in two games.
The boys built on their lead with an RBI single for Harper, his 70th of the season, in the top of the seventh followed by the definition of a hustle play from Jean Segura as he sprinted down the first base line after hitting a dribbler to the pitcher to beat the tag and score a somewhat ugly RBI to broaden the lead to 3-1.
The Pirates’ field play from then on looked like that of a 11U Little League team as reliever Holmes overthrew the first baseman on a routine throw to give the Phillies yet another run followed by a wild pitch to allow Hernandez to steal home .
JT knocked a insurance run off the wall to extend the lead to 6-1 and Cole Irvin finished the job to give the Phils the victory.
They will continue the PA showdown versus the Pirates tonight at 7:05 in Pittsburgh. Tune in and trust Gabe(?)
